October 2003: *The Liver Meeting* 54th Annual Meeting of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases
Paul and Mike at the consortium's booth. Click on photo to see Linda.
Dr. Larry Blatt of Intermune, Inc., and consortium PI, Dr. Myron Tong,
of Huntington Memorial Hospital Liver Center, visit Mike & Linda
The consortium hosted an exhibitor's booth for the 3rd year in a row at the 54th Annual Association for the Study of Liver Diseases meeting held in Boston. Linda Wilkes, the consortium's Project Manager, and Michael Alcorn, Contracts Officer, greeted interested sponsors and investigators and welcomed back some old friends. Dr. Pockros also managed to stop by for few minutes in between his other commitments.
Q: Linda, tell me about the networking you accomplished while at AASLD?
LW: Amgen Pharmaceuticals had a neighboring booth, for those of you that remember 990759, the principle investigator initiated- trial that we started in 1999. I also spoke with Angela Klopfer and Kevin Smith from Ortho Biotech who stopped by to chat about the ongoing trial and a possible new trial on the horizon. Vicki McMinn-Lorenzi from SciClone Pharmaceuticals came by and she expressed praise for completing enrollment in 803 and hoped to get 804 wrapped up very soon. Susie Pilloud from NGI came by. I also visited some sponsors we are hoping to work with; Idenix, Vertex, XTLBio, Innogenetics, LabCorp, Gilead and Nabi. Larry Stanbaugh and Kurt Gelson from Maxim visited with nothing new on the trial they consulted with us on back in 1999. Larry Heller from Schering and Larry Blatt from Intermune both stopped by. IDUN didn't have a booth this year but Dr. David Shapiro, MiRa Huyghe and Karen Valentino came by and expressed gratitude at the timely progress being made towards enrolling their study and the promising data so far. All in all, we pressed a lot of hands and inevitably, we seem to get at least 1 new study that we can trace back to the booth at AASLD.
MA: Yes, and we had a number of individuals interested in the consortium as potential member sites, as well as the potential sponsors that Linda mentioned.
LW: And let's not forget the consortium members who came by the booth to say 'Hi'. This year we gave out embossed business card holders as a thank-you gift to all of the consortium PIs and coordinators that came by the booth. We saw Drs. Tong, McClain, Duchini, Younossi, O'Brien, McHutchison, Balart, Reddy, Nyberg and Yoffe. In addition, we were lucky to see some coordinators as well. Patrice Al-Saden, former Afdhal coordinator, and Maria Torres from the University of Miami stopped by. A coordinator from Johns Hopkins introduced herself and I unfortunately forgot her name.
Q: How will the booth be different next year?
MA: Next year the consortium plans to upgrade the booth with a floor-to-ceiling display with new visuals and improved lighting.
LW: If any of you have suggestions for us regarding the new look, please contact me. We are eager for your input.
Q: Do you feel the booth poster was well received?
MA: Hard to tell. Primary value is in the face-to-face contact we get with new and old consortium members and new sponsors. There's nothing like matching a face with a name and a lot of our members are more prone to ask us questions face to face. I also benefit because I can ask them about the ins and outs of their site's budget or contract process. It's beneficial for both parties.

Fully Funded CME National Hepatitis C & Infectious Disease Training Program (HIDTP), March-June 2003
by Paul J. Pockros, MD
SCLRC launched a new area of activity in the 3rd quarter of 2002 with the training of physicians and extenders in treatment of chronic viral hepatitis. This was initiated with a training program done for Gilead on the treatment of HBV. Secondly, an Advisory Board meeting was held in San Diego during the week of the ICAAC meeting with a group of thought leaders in Infectious Disease and Hepatology. SCLRC has been provided with grants from Roche Pharmaceuticals and Ortho Biotech (Johnson and Johnson Pharmaceuticals) to initiate a series of 1-day training courses for Internal Medicine and ID physicians to educate and train them in the treatment of HCV and co infected HIV/HCV patients. A training program is being designed with the intent to begin the first 16 programs in March of 2003. These programs will roll out at sites around the country.
The intent of these programs is to ultimately expand the number of treating HCV physicians to include Internal Medicine and Infectious Disease specialists who have expressed interest in doing this.
CME credit will be provided for the physicians attending the programs.
Would you like to view the HIDTP Agenda from 2003?
If you are interested in attending the next series, please contact Cheryl Trinidad, Conference Services Supervisor, at ctrinidad@scrippsclinic.com or 858-882-8451, to be added to the waiting list for the program nearest you.

PARTICIPANT QUOTES
- Los Angeles: "Excellent review of difficult topic."
- Miami: "Great presentations, very informative, please have more."
- San Diego: "The small size of the program afforded an excellent interaction with speaker and attendees. I have been to 4 seminars, this one is the best."
- Boston: "I thoroughly enjoyed the conference, and was particularly pleased with the presenters willingness to entertain questions and encouragement of audience participation. The syllabus was well presented; I look forward to keeping it as a reference. Thank you. Excellent program. I liked the small size and informality, great opportunities for questions and answers."
- New York: "Very geared as a program for ID to start treating HCV."
- Chapel Hill: "Excellent program! Speakers were well prepared, interactive with course participants. Great opportunity to interface with sub specialists."
- Philadelphia: "Excellent review of this vast subject in such a limited time."
- San Francisco: "Thank you very much for providing this wonderful educational opportunity. I think it's a great idea to have speakers from different types of practice, academic and private. It allows me to compare all aspects of the doctor and the practicality. Good topic, contents and speakers."
- Washington: "Very useful, on my level of knowledge about HCV. I consider myself an expert in HIV and OK with HCV. I feel much better equipped to deal with HCV."
- Seattle: "Best CME course I have attended in years."
- San Diego: "Both excellent speakers. Please have them both again. Enjoyed the educational pearls very much."
- New Orleans: "Good practical info for PCP and more in depth for GI and ID folks. May need to have an extra break, too much important information in a short time period, nice to get out early but it probably lowered the overall retention of information. Some slides in syllabus were hard to read for future reference."
- Chicago: "This program is of a highly academic level and furnished vast amount of information. Helpful to physicians who test patients with HCV and or HIV."
- New York: "Excellent program, please continue these."
May 3, 2003: *California Liver Walk* San Diego Zoo
Breaking News: SC Liver Research Consortium Raises $1,995 for ALF
Even though the rain made a guest appearance at this year's Liver Walk, we still had a great time. TEAM SCLRC was 51 members strong, not including our unofficial members who bought prize opportunity tickets to show their support when they couldn't walk. KUSI news did their weather report from the zoo and TEAM SCLRC was lucky enough to have some of it's members, Elizabeth Bois (10) and Marissa Lopez (9), interviewed before the walk. They fielded questions about the weather and their favorite zoo animal like seasoned pros!
Amidst the constant downpour, TEAM SCLRC huddled under trees to stay dry until our team photo and prize opportunity drawing took place. Due to the weather, we didn't take as many photos so that everyone could get in the zoo and start walking to warm up, but you can still spot smiles under those umbrellas in this year's team photo. We hurriedly drew this year's winners from the ticket bowl before it became a complete sopping mess. And as always, the Liver Walk itself did not disappoint. We saw a baby camel and several baby deer.
TEAM SCLRC Volunteer, Calvin Bois, manning the team's table
TEAM SCLRC had so many prize sponsors in 2003 that we broke last year's record for money raised-$1,020! This is the 3rd year in a row that the Hyatt Regency in La Jolla and Tutto Mare's have donated gift certificates. We truly appreciate each of the 10 companies who generously donated to our prize drawing. On behalf of SCLRC and the American Liver Foundation- thank you for taking the time to care about liver disease research and treatment.
The following 10 organizations donated prizes that TEAM SCLRC raffled off on the morning of the walk, raising $1,995 for the San Diego Chapter of the American Liver Foundation (when combined with our team registration):

Team Captain Wendy Bois
Thank you TEAM SCLRC-you didn't let a little rain deter you. I was so proud to see most of our team show up in spite of the rain-way to go! Thank you to all the team members who bought prize opportunity tickets or took time to collect donations-not an easy task.
And thank you to all my helpers who shielded the ticket bowl, loaned us umbrellas, collected money, passed out bibs and t-shirts or took photos-I couldn't have done it without you.
March 7, 2003: Mystery Gala 2003 * Westgate Hotel
sponsored by the San Diego Chapter of the American Liver Foundation
Dr. Paul Pockros, Director of SC Liver Research Consortium, was proud to be a sponsor at this 1940's style mystery fund-raiser dinner to benefit the San Diego Chapter of the American Liver Foundation. Guests arrived at the Westgate and were greeted at the top of the grand staircase by the actors and enjoyed hors d'oeuvres as the play began with the "murder" of the Captain of the RMS Caronia. The mystery was solved during a wonderful sit-down dinner with news channel 7/39 in attendance, giving ALF and liver disease some much-needed publicity. Dancing followed and guests were encouraged to get their photos taken with the "crew" for souvenirs.
We were pleased and proud to be in attendance when one of our consortium members, Dr. Mario Chojkier, received an award. This was a wonderful, creative evening which will hopefully turn into an annual event.
