National HIDTP 2004

2003 HIDTP brochure

SC Liver Research Consortium, with grants provided by Roche Laboratories and Ortho Biotech (Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceuticals), will be rolling out their National Hepatitis C and Infectious Disease Training Program (HIDTP) for the second year in a row beginning in September of 2004. These 1-day, fully-funded training courses are targeted at Internal Medicine and Infectious Disease physicians. Our goal is to educate and provide training in the treatment of HCV and co-infected HIV/HCV patients. We hope to expand the number of treating HCV physicians to include Internal Medicine and Infectious Disease specialists who expressed interest in learning about this unique population.

There will be 15 programs total (see dates below) throughout the United States. Last year this program was hosted at 16 major sites with much success. Once again, CME credit will be provided to the attendees.

28th Annual Associated Clinical Research Professionals Meeting/ San Diego Convention Center

May 15-19th, 2004

Mike and Linda had a chance to display the Consortium's new exhibit at the ACRP national meeting held in San Diego. The exhibit received high praise in regards to design, graphics, layout and the special blinking light treatments that were used to designate different site locations on the map.

SCLRC's New Exhibit Unveiled

We look forward to exhibiting our "new look" this year at AASLD in October, and then next year at DIA and DDW possibly. We believe these 3 meetings are the best place to market the consortium to potential sponsors.

Around 2200 people attended ACRP this year. The vendors targeted clinical sites, PIs, CRCs and CRAs. It was nice to catch up with familiar faces and vendors that the consortium has worked with in the past. While not the best venue for SCLRC to network with new sponsors, Linda had the opportunity to attend many of the classes offered throughout the day. Her favortie one dealt with negotiating the hidden costs in a budget. Mike and Linda plan to utilize this information to obtain more pass through costs to the sponsors for work that has not been acknowledged in the past. Examples of these costs would be monitoring visits, start-up fees, sponsor aduits, FDA audits, attending investigator meetings, reconsenting amendments, etc.

Throughout the year SCLRC recieves leads, newsletters, and emails that keep us abreast of pending studies. However, exhibiting at meetings provides invaluable face-to-face networking and has introduced us to many of our current sponsors.

California Liver Walk at the San Diego Zoo

May 1st, 2004

TEAM SCLRC, 5 years strong, or as we like to say, the Cinco de Mayo year!

TEAM SCLRC walked for the 5th year in a row at the California Liver Walk held at the San Diego Zoo. We raised $2,245.00, beating our goal of $2,000.00! We had 59 team members, many of whom have participated all 5 years. We were lucky to have beautiful weather and a long list of prizes donated by extremely generous sponors. As a lot of you know, we raise almost half of our team donation the morning of the walk with prize opportunity ticket sales that culminate in a grand prize drawing right before the walk officially starts. If you would like to donate a prize for next year's drawing, contact me at wbois@scrippsclinic.com. (See the list of prizes and sponsors below).

We were pleased that Dr. Pockros, who sponsors TEAM SCLRC each year, was able to squeeze our walk into his busy schedule and walk with the team like he has done in years past.

The American Liver Foundation raised $70,000.00 this year, beating their goal of $50,000.00 quite nicely.

This year we had a couple great team incentives from local sponsors. For the second year in a row, Bryan Scholl of Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream at UTC, donated 50 free scoop coupons to everyone who purchased prize opportunity tickets. This always works well since it makes every ticket holder an automatic winner. And Shawn Welty, of Subway Sandwiches in the Costa Verde Shopping Center, was kind enough to donate a 3-foot sandwich for the team to devour the morning of the walk. Since the walk is early, free food can always be counted on to turn frowns upside down.
