AASLD/ San Francisco, November 11-15In November SC Liver Research Consortium exhibited at AASLD in San Francisco (booth #425). Mike Alcorn, our Contracts Officer, hosted the booth on his own and fielded a variety of questions from American and European sponsors. Dr. Pockros also attended the meeting and was a guest speaker for the "Doc Eye for the Hep Guy" program. In addition, Dr. Pockros had key 1-on-1 meetings with several sponsors interested in learning more about what the consortium has to offer. Thank you to all the SCLRC investigators who stopped by during the busy meeting to catch up with Mike. |
At the request of the U.S. Surgeon General's office and the U.S. Health and Human Services Agency, Scripps Hospital deployed a medical response team on Monday, September 12th, to assist with the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. Dr. Paul J. Pockros volunteered to be one of twelve physicians chosen to deploy to Houston, Texas, where they will staff an emergency and outpatient clinic that has been created in the Houston Convention Center. Our team will relieve the exhausted volunteers who have been treating as many as a 1,000 patients a day for a range of medical conditions, including gastrointestinal problems (Dr. Pockros' specialty). All staff were selected based on their specialties and their experience with disaster relief efforts.
We are honored that Scripps was the first health care provider asked to deploy under this long-term strategy. We will provide you with an update from Houston as soon as we hear from Dr. Pockros!
In May we exhibited at DDW in Chicago and this was our first year at this large, well-attended meeting. Mike Alcorn, Contracts Officer, took 600 of the HCV CD-monographs (we distributed 30,000 of these CDs in January for PIs to complete for CME credit) to the meeting and gave them all away.
Dr. Pockros, Mike, and Cheryl Trinidad, met with various sponsors to discuss the continuation of the HCV and HBV infectious disease training programs. In addition, they also met with sponsors to discuss participation in some clinical trials in the works. Overall, Dr. Pockros felt it was a positive experience.
The California Liver Walk was a huge success! The San Diego chapter of the American Liver Foundation raised $89,085 and TEAM SCLRC contributed $2,850! We received an award for being the 5th place fund-raiser at the walk! We had 68 members walking on TEAM SCLRC. The walk was held at the San Diego Zoo and it was a beautiful day, a few sprinkles in the beginning but then sunny and warm. (Team photo will be posted soon!)
It’s so early when we enter the zoo, that we often are treated to one-on-one conversations with the keepers as they feed their charges. This year several members of TEAM SCLRC spoke with the leopard keeper as he was doling out giant hunks of meat and learned quite a bit. A lot of the team took advantage of the free zoo passes they received and reentered the zoo after the walk.
As you know, the team walks in support of local California artist, Kelli Jaunsen. Kelli is anxiously waiting for a liver/heart transplant. Even though she is only 21, she has already undergone over 40 paracentesis procedures and other invasive medical therapies while waiting for a transplant. UCLA has decided against transplanting her and so her family is pursuing a transplant at Cedars-Sinai, since they now have funding for the surgery from an anonymous donor.
In a recent email from her father we learned that Kelli underwent paracentesis procedures on the 14th and on the 25th of April. In between those dates, she went on a trip of a lifetime, flying on a private jet to Disney World in Florida with the actor John Stamos. She was treated like a VIP for two days at Disney World and then she went to Key Largo to swim with the dolphins. Kelli has never been so happy and this trip can only be described as a miracle for her. It was paid for by the same anonymous donor. Here is a link to Kelli's web site if you would like to learn more about her brave struggle and how you can help. Her art will knock your socks off too!
Thank you to everyone who bought prize opportunity tickets for TEAM SCLRC’s drawing to benefit ALF. We raised $1,165.00 in ticket sales ($835 on the morning of the walk!). We had 32 prizes to raffle off this year so the drawing was fast and furious. Congratulations to the winners posted below and a huge thank you to all of our generous sponsors, many of which donate EVERY YEAR. This year La Jolla Village Square's California Pizza Kitchen put together a neat prize ticket incentive. They awarded anyone who bought a prize opportunity ticket for our drawing, a free appetizer coupon for their restaurant. Ticket sales picked up considerably after this kind reward. Thanks CPK!! And a big thank you to Dr. Pockros for sponsoring the team's registration!!
Team member Amy Ayer won a t-shirt and team member Felicia Sanders won a 13" TV/DVD and from KSON's prize bingo as well.
